4. Blood ties
Prudence's last words hit me like a hammer. Stunned, I couldn't find anything to say in response. I simply turned around. The last thing I wanted was to let the Queen Mother see the tears come to my eyes. She would have rejoiced. I went back to Marion at the front door, grabbed her hand and we ran out of that house of lunatics, rushing like mad down the street until we reached the closest subway stop. My best friend followed me without asking any questions and took me back to my house, in silence, supporting me with her presence and hugging me when she left me on my doorstep. Marion has the gift of frustrating me in crisis situations, but she's figured me out. She understands me perfectly and she knows when I need to be alone, when I don't want to talk. She's the best ally I could ever dream of.
Getting back to my flat, I sprawl head-first onto my large sofa and finally let myself break down. The tears start to flow, I let out all of my pain, without thinking about anything else, just crying, sobbing, releasing. When I'm finally all dried out, emptied, and my sobs no longer prevent me from talking, I do the only thing that I can do. Call Gabriel for help. As I expected, my lover doesn't pick up the phone and I find myself leaving a desperate, icy message in a monotone voice on his voicemail, begging him to come back, from wherever he is, to come back to me. A few seconds latter after I hang up, a text message makes my heart leap.
[I'm coming. Don't move.]
I'm almost asleep when Gabriel appears in my living room. I struggle to get off the couch and come closer to him, but I don't have the strength to get up. His sky blue shirt and rolled-up sleeves show off his tanned chest and muscular forearms, also highlighting his blue eyes, which are both intense and gentle. His handsomeness blows me over, like it does every time I see him again after a long time apart. It's as if my mind refuses to get used to it, as if my memory can't hold so much grace and perfection. His presence alone is enough to calm me down. My lover comes and sits down next to me. He takes me in his arms and I curl up like a wounded bird and let him rock me, caress my hair, intoxicate me with his scent and his warmth.
“Your mother asked me to set you free,” I say, whispering, without thinking it over, not knowing where to start.
“Prudence doesn't even know what that word means.”
“She wants you to go back to your wife and your son. She wants you to become a family again.”
“We never were one in the first place.”
“But she's right. You have the right to be happy.”
“That's not what happiness looks like to me. Nor what I think a family is.”
“But you -”
“Eleanor already had her chance.
